Exciting Acid Grassland Finds

The other day I went on a lunch-time walk to a woodland local to my work, surveying it as a part of the SBIS AWI project I’m helping volunteer for, and I was so excited when I stumbled across a big parcel of acid grassland!

When I first saw the sprinkles of red within the sward, I practically ran over to them. I love sheep’s sorrel (Rumex acetosella), it just paints such a dreamy scene across a heathland/acid grassland. The burgundy red, with the various shades of green and yellow highlights of gorse (Ulex europaeus) in the background. It’s just truly gorgeous.

I was also happy to see the sweet vernal-grass out in flower. I always struggle to get decent botanical photographs of grasses, my phone camera never seems to focus on the inflorescences. If anyone has any phone photography tips do let me know!

It’s spring walks like this which make me so excited for upcoming summer NVC surveys…

Myself looking probably a little too happy to see this magnificently terrible giant hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum).
